‘Friends,’ the Sitcom That’s Still a Hit in Major League Baseball
影集『六人行』在MLB球員中還是很夯


When he returns home from the stadium, Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Freddy
Galvis often gets into bed and watches reruns of “Friends.” Even though
Galvis, 27, is from Venezuela and grasped English late in life, he is so
addicted to the sitcom that he has watched every episode of the 10-season run
at least five times — and counting — to the exasperation of his wife.
當費城人游擊手Freddy Galvis從球場回家之後，他常常就上床看重播的『六人行』影    
集。根據他的太太說，從委內瑞拉來的Galvis，現在27歲，很晚才開始學英文，他已經看

“It’ll be the same episodes I’ve seen already,” he said, “and my wife is
like, ‘Yet again?’”

Yankees pitcher Luis Severino, 23, who is from the Dominican Republic, can
relate. So can Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta, 30, who is
Venezuelan, and Miguel Gonzalez, 33, the Texas Rangers pitcher who was born
in Mexico, as well as other Latino players throughout Major League Baseball.
23歲洋基投手Severino從多明尼加來的，他完全可以有同理心。其他像是30歲響尾蛇外野  
手Peralta來自委內瑞拉，33歲遊騎兵投手Miguel Gonzalez出生在墨西哥，以及很多其他

For at least one generation of Americans, “Friends” endures as a cultural
touchstone, a glowing chunk of 1990s amber. But its runaway popularity
stretched far beyond the United States, and for some Latino baseball players
it is something more: a language guide, a Rosetta Stone disguised as six
20-somethings commingling in a Manhattan apartment.
至少對一個世代的美國人，『六人行』是一個文化上的標竿，代表了90年代的輝煌。它的  
影響力遠遠超出了美國本土，而且對一些拉丁裔的棒球員來說，『六人行』還是一個語言  
學習工具，像是一個語言學習軟體Rosetta Stone，但是是用六個二十出頭的年輕人在美   
國曼哈頓公寓的情境來表現。


And also just a funny show.
而且它還是一個很有趣的節目。

“Now that it’s on Netflix, I always put it on and watch it,” said Mets
infielder Wilmer Flores, 26, who is from Venezuela. “When I get up in the
morning, I turn on the TV, and whatever episode is there I’ll watch and keep
watching. I stop it when I come to the stadium. When I come home from the
stadium, I pick up where I left off.”
「而且現在它在Netflix上架，我一直都在看，」26歲從委內瑞拉來的梅子內野手Flores說 
到。「早上起床的時候我打開電視，看上次播到哪裡，就繼續看，等到要去球場了我就暫

What has the sitcom done for his English proficiency?

“It’s near perfect,” said Flores’s teammate, Jerry Blevins, who is from
Tennessee. “When he doesn’t know something, it’s surprising.”
「接近完美，」Flores的隊友，從田納西來的Blevins說。「當他不知道一些事的時候，   
那是很讓人驚訝的。」

Flores, Peralta and Galvis built a rudimentary command of English in school
in Venezuela. “But I always got bad grades because I didn’t like that way
of learning,” Galvis said.
Flores，Peralta跟Galvis都只有以前在委內瑞拉只有基礎的英文學習，「但是我英文成績 
很差，因為我不喜歡那種學習方式，」Galvis說。

Gonzalez, who was surrounded by Spanish, his first language, at home, also
had English classes in school when he moved to Southern California. Some
players also received English instruction after signing with a team.
Gonzales的母語是西班牙文，所以當他搬到南加州的時候他有去上一些英文課。一些球員  
在跟球隊簽約後也會去上英文課。


But these players said that they learned more when they arrived in the United
States and fully plunged into English. In terms of immersion, few things
compare to landing in a small minor-league town with few Spanish speakers —
 and needing to order food.
但是這些球員說他們在到了美國，整個人都進入英文環境之後，才學得更好。整個人沈浸  
在英語環境，就像一些事情，譬如到了小聯盟的城市得要去點餐等。


Popular culture, especially “Friends,” was education through entertainment.
像『六人行』這種流行文化就是一種寓教於樂的代表。


“The basics you can learn in a classroom,” said Flores, who was interviewed
in Spanish, along with most of the players, for ease. “But to speak the
language, that comes from here in the clubhouse, on the street or from
television.”
「你可以在教室裡學到一些基本的東西，」Flores跟其他一些球員在用西班牙語訪問的時  
候說到。「但是要講英文，那就是得要從球場學，在球團裡學，從一般生活上，或者從電  
視上學。」


Flores said he cannot remember exactly when he first watched “Friends,” but
it was sometime early in his minor league career in the United States,
perhaps when he was in Class A as a teenager and far from home. Although he
said he understood enough English then, he was too unsure to respond in
conversation. As he grew more comfortable, he soaked up words from teammates
and bought the DVD’s for all 10 seasons of “Friends,” which ran from 1994
to 2004, so he could watch it again at home in the off-season.
Flores說他沒辦法確切記得什麼時候第一次看『六人行』，大概是他很早在小聯盟的時    
候，差不多是1A的期間，那時候他還是青少年而且離家很遠。雖說那時他聽的懂英文，但  
是他對於回話太沒信心所以沒辦法交談。當他年紀增長比較有信心了，他整個人都沈浸在  
與隊友交談的環境，然後買了所有10季『六人行』DVD，所以他可以在季後沒打球的時候在 
家可以看。

Now he is surely baseball’s biggest “Friends” fanatic. He has visited the
studio in Burbank, Calif. where the show was filmed , and has chosen the show
’s theme song to be played on the stadium public-address system when it’s
his turn to bat during home games.
現在他是棒球員裡『六人行』的大粉絲，他去看了『六人行』在加州的片場；在主場上場  
打擊時播的進場音樂就是『六人行』的主題曲。


Flores said he still watches it almost every day, and that he had seen every
episode at least seven times. “My mom thinks I watch it too much,” he said.
Flores說他幾乎還是每天都在看『六人行』，每一集都至少看七遍以上。「我媽說我看得  
太多遍了，」他說。


Gonzalez speaks perhaps the best English of this bunch because he was exposed
to it at a young age growing up in San Fernando, Calif. Yet he still had help
from movies and television shows, including “Saved by the Bell” — and “
Friends,” which he watched with an uncle.
Gonzalez大概是這群球員裡面英文講的最好的，或許是因為他比較早就有接觸到英文，他  
在加州San Fernando長大。然而他還是從電影或電視影集學到不少，包括另一齣喜劇      
『Saved by the Bell』--當然也有『六人行』，他是跟他叔叔一起看的。


“That’s what he watched, so we’d sit there and watch TV with him,”
 Gonzalez said.
「他在看那些影集，所以我們就一起坐下來看囉～」Gonzalez說到。


For Galvis, the English-language broadcast with Spanish subtitles on
Venezuelan television, was an excellent learning tool. “You can compare what
’s going on that way,” he said. “If they say ‘happy,’ you see he’s
happy and the subtitle says ‘feliz’, then you can learn. You might not
learn 100 percent, but you’ll learn to associate.”
對於Galvis來說，一些英語的影集有配西班牙語的字幕會在委內瑞拉播，那是很好的學習  
工具。「你可以互相對照，」他說。「如果他們說『happy』，你在字幕上會看到         
『feliz』，這樣你就學到了。或許不會100％對，但是你會學著如何去類推。」


And if Severino did not understand a word from the show, he would ask
teammates or friends for help.
即使Severino看這個影集有一個字看不懂，他會問跟他的隊友或朋友。


Peralta said that listening to music in English and marrying an American
woman were also beneficial. He does not need subtitles anymore to watch “
Friends,” and still watches it daily despite having already seen every
episode.
Peralta說他聽英文歌，而且娶了一個美國人，那對他的英文都有幫助。他看『六人行』的 
時候不用加字幕，雖然每一集都看過了，他還是每天看。


“When we’re in Arizona, it starts at 11 p.m. on Nick at Nite, so I watch
until 1 a.m. and then I go to sleep,” he said.
「當我們在亞利桑納的時候，它會在晚上11點播，所以我會看到凌晨一點後再去睡覺。」  
他說。


Most of the players said Joey, the floundering actor played by Matt LeBlanc,
was their favorite character. The show’s comedy appealed to them even though
— or perhaps because — the lives of six white Americans in the West Village
hardly resembled their own.
大多數的球員說，『六人行』裡面Matt LeBlanc扮演的Joey是他們最喜歡的角色。這個影  
集跟他們有共鳴，即使裡面那六個人所生活的曼哈頓西部區域跟他們的家鄉一點都不像。


The New York that Flores has come to know playing for the Mets is not like
the one represented in “Friends.” “In photos, it all looks the same, but
the traffic and driving around is way different,” he said.
Flores在的梅子隊所在的紐約跟『六人行』所演的紐約區域是不一樣的，「但是在畫面看  
起來很像，雖然交通狀況跟開車繞一圈看完之後是差很多的，」他說。


Like Flores, Galvis is evangelical about “Friends.” He tells young
Spanish-speaking players that he is living proof that consuming popular
culture in English can help. And although he is now a capable English
speaker, he still watches “Friends” with subtitles in Spanish so that his
wife can learn English.
就像Flores，Galvis到處跟人像傳教似的宣揚『六人行』。他跟年輕的西班牙語系球員說  
他就是藉由學習流行文化學習英文的活教材，雖然他現在英文講得很順，他還是在家看    
『六人行』的時候打開西班牙語字幕，因為這樣他老婆就可以學英文。


Marta Kauffman, one of the creators of the show, said she was delighted to
hear about its unlikely and unintended impact on certain players. She
compared the phenomenon to how Viagra was originally designed to treat heart
problems but later was embraced for a very different purpose.
『六人行』的製片說她很高興知道這影集對一些球員有意想不到的效果，她把『六人行』  
比喻成威而鋼，因為一開始威而鋼是要拿來治心臟病的。


“You always want your show to be enjoyable and for people to say, ‘Oh my
God, I love watching your show,’” she said. “But what you don’t expect is
for it to accomplish something, and this feels mighty fine.”
「你總會希望自己做的節目是好看的，而且看完的觀眾會說，『我的老天鵝啊！那個節目  
真好看，』」她說。「但是當你知道它達到其他的效果時，那感覺真正好！」

Kauffman added that she would love to meet the “Friends”-loving players one
day. But she offered one regret: “To the player whose wife is sick of
watching it so much, I apologize.”
『六人行』的製片說她很想有機會可以見見這些熱愛『六人行』的球員們，但是她要懺悔  
一下，「對那些已經看『六人行』很膩的球員老婆們，我對不起你們～』

我在翻譯的時候是有再去查Rosetta Stone是什麼東西的  只是在這篇文章
指的應該是軟體  不是那個石碑

我同意在本文裡並沒有提到"語言學習軟體"  但是整篇是在說非英語系球員
藉由看六人行學英文，而且那一段：

『六人行』除了是好看的影集，也是一個language guide－所以，我還是傾向是軟體，
而不是石碑。
