While getting Amar’e Stoudemire was a huge dose of good news, the Mavericks
may have gotten even better results Tuesday with their health situation.
The Mavericks expect to regain the services of starting point guard Rajon
Rondo when they resume action Thursday at Oklahoma City. Rondo and coach Rick
Carlisle both said they are optimistic he’ll be able to play after missing
six games with facial fractures suffered Jan. 31. The Maveicks went 4-2 in
those games.
Meanwhile, Tyson Chandler’s sprained left ankle, suffered Feb. 9, also is
improved and he likely will return Thursday after missing just one game.
“I’m very blessed,” Rondo said. “I’ve had a couple surgeries before and
it’s not a good thing to come back from surgery or any injury. Keeping my
fingers crossed.”
Rondo said he has a mask that he has worn in practice, but he’s not sure
whether or not he’ll wear the extra protection in games.
“I don’t know yet,” he said. “I tried to wear it at practice, but we didn
’t have much contact for me to wear the mask, so I didn’t put it on. I came
in last night and shot in the mask. It’s specifically made for my face, so it
’s not uncomfortable.”
Rondo, averaging 8.7 points, 8.7 assists and 6.3 rebounds, said he targeted
the first game after the All-Star Game as his return date.
“Whether I had surgery or not, I thought I would probably come back at this
time,” he said. “That’s why if I had to do surgery, I wanted to push it up
as fast as possible. Each couple days, I went back to the doctor and he
evaluated me and it got better each time, so I passed a lot of the eye exam
tests and feel better each day.
“My main concern was double vision and I don’t have double vision. I’ve
talked to a couple doctors and for the most part, pretty much said the same
thing: if I’m not having double vision and my eye hasn’t dropped two
millimeters then I’ll be fine.”
Rondo also said he no longer has any pain, although the first few days were a
much different story.
The injury occurred when he inadvertently got kneed in the face by teammate
Richard Jefferson at Orlando.
“Nothing went through my mind,” he said. “Actually thought I was going to
be able to come back out and play. Once I got to the back, I blew my nose and
then my eye swelled up. I didn’t know I had an orbital fracture in my face
or anything until I blew my nose.”
