Mavs may look to keep Dirk Nowitzki’s minutes down in Year 18

DALLAS — He’s been willing to sacrifice his role as the leading scorer for
the Dallas Mavericks. He’s also made several financial concessions to help the
Mavericks build a roster capable of competing for the NBA title.

Now, Mavericks superstar Dirk Nowitzki may be asked to see a reduction in his
minutes in order to keep the 13-time All-Star fresh throughout the upcoming
season.

接下來這球季 老大可能會被減少上場時間 (開始養生囉)

Playing in 77 games during the 2014-15 campaign, Nowitzki finished second on
the team in scoring with an average of 17.3 points per outing in only 29.6
minutes a contest. Nowitzki also continued to cement his place in league lore
in the process, making his 13th All-Star appearance and passing Moses Malone
(27,409) for seventh place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

After averaging 37.7 minutes per game during the ’08-09 season, Nowitzki saw
his playing time steadily take a dip prior to going back up to 32.9 minutes an
outing in the ’13-14 campaign. But after seeing his minutes cut under 30 for
the first time since his rookie season, Nowitzki may again have his time on the
court shortened in order to preserve the 7-footer throughout the course of the
grueling 82-game schedule.

And as Mavs coach Rick Carlisle explains, the reduction of playing time is just
another sacrifice Nowitzki would be willing to make in order to see the team
succeed.

“With Dirk’s situation in this stage of his career, we’ve had to do some
creative things to try to keep the team as competitive as possible around
him,” Carlisle confessed last season following the team’s first-round playoff
exit against the Houston Rockets in five games.

He added: “With a guy of Dirk’s character and level of loyalty and level of
love for this franchise and this city, he’s demonstrated pretty thoroughly
that he’s willing to make any sacrifice possible. He’s made great financial
sacrifices to get the team better around him. … I’ve had a chance to work
with him extremely closely for the last seven years, and I hope that this goes
on for several more years. He continues to work unbelievably hard to keep
himself as one of the great players in the game.

He was an All-Star this year. His greatness is not in question. Going forward,
he’s such an important asset to this franchise, and it’s hard to describe
his value.”

The 37-year-old Nowitzki demonstrated his value and showed that he still has
plenty left in the tank last season, connecting on 45.9 percent from the field
and 38 percent from three-point range in the regular season. He then stepped up
his production during the playoffs, scoring 21.2 points a contest and pulling
down 10.4 rebounds in 36.2 minutes an outing as the shorthanded Mavs put up a
fight against the second-seeded Rockets.

With that said, Nowitzki modestly admits that the Mavericks can’t be reliant
on him for heavy stretches if they hope to again make a run deep into the
postseason.

Last season, Nowitzki surpassed Hakeem Olajuwon to become the greatest
foreign-born scorer in league history after posting 23 points in a 106-98 home
win over Sacramento on Nov. 11. Just six days later, Nowitzki eclipsed the
27,000-point plateau by scoring 13 in a 107-80 win at Charlotte, joining Karl
Malone, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan as one of four players in league history
to reach the feat with one team.

If Nowitzki replicates his scoring output from last season, he could slide
ahead of Shaquille O’Neal and move into the sixth slot on the all-time scoring
list within the first 28 games of the ’15-16 schedule. He then will attempt to
become just the sixth player in league history to amass 30,000 points in his
career, hoping to join Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Bryant, Jordan and
Wilt Chamberlain in that exclusive fraternity.

However, Nowitzki admits that he would willingly sacrifice those personal
accolades if it equals more wins for the Mavs this season. He may also
ultimately have to sacrifice playing time in order to give the Mavericks a
boost during the stretch run of the schedule.

“Well, you know, we want to get better. That’s no question,” Nowitzki
matter-of-factly said. “We want to go further in the playoffs again. We’ve
been ousted twice in basically the first round the last two years. And whatever
I’ve got to do, I’m ready to help. I know that at 37 I can’t be the No. 1
option if we want to play for the championship. That’s just normal. That’s
how the cycle goes.”
