Real name: José Juan Barea
Born: June 26, 1984 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico

2. Mother knows best
He is only the seventh Puerto Rican to play in the NBA, and even though he is
officially listed at 6 feet tall…but his mom says he is only 5' 10 ¾".

3. When you're hot, you're hot
For the first time in his career, Barea earned NBA Player of the Week this
season for his play in between March 28-April 3.

He averaged 23.5 points and 6.8 assists per game while shooting 52.1 percent
from the floor and 48 percent from 3-point range.
"Absolutely awesome week," Barea said. "I'm in a great rhythm. Coach and my
teammates are doing a great job of putting me in the right positions. And
we're winning games, which is most important."

He was the first Mavs to claim the honor since Monta Ellis in 2014.
4. And that wasn't even the most important thing to happen to him that week
On March 31, Barea's girlfriend, Viviana Ortiz, gave birth to his second
child - Paulina.

The next night, J.J. went out and dropped 29 points in Detroit as the Mavs
defeated the Pistons, 98-89.

5. Part of history
Barea is one of only two Puerto Rican born players to ever win an NBA title.
He joined Butch Lee who won a ring with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1980 (even
though he did not play after suffering an injury that would force his
retirement).

Barea played in all 21 playoff games for the Mavericks during their 2011
title run.

7. International success
While playing for the Puerto Rican national team, he won a gold medal at the
2006 and 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games, along with another gold
medal from the 2011 Pan American Games. He has 12 medals (six gold, five
silver, and one bronze) from various events in his international career.

10. Show me the money
When DeAndre Jordan reneged on his 4-year/$80 million deal this past summer,
Barea may have had the most to gain. He went from most likely making the
league minimum, to signing a 4-year/$16 million contract to stay with the
Mavs.
