Minutes after the Mavericks' season ended, in the bowels of
Chesapeake Energy Arena, Donnie Nelson stood with a pained look on
his face.

Not so much because his team had been booted from the playoffs in
five games by Oklahoma City, although that was part of it.

Mostly, the president of basketball operations was already looking
at the daunting task ahead.

This is where it gets hard for Nelson, owner Mark Cuban and coach
Rick Carlisle.

"You got that right," Nelson said.

Five seasons have gone by since the 2011 chamionship and the Mavericks
haven't made it out of the first round of the playoffs in any of them.

For a team that once had such a good groove going with periodic deep
playoff runs, this is not the kind of rut they want to be in.

has proven to be masterful at squeezing every drop he can out of his
continually changing rosters.

While it's fun for fans and media to speculate in what makes sense

They have a lot of work to do.

"We didn't think we had a 70-win team, so we knew we had holes," Cuban
said. "Look, there's no secret sauce. We've got some good young guys.
We'll look at them more. We'll look to bring back (some players) and
add - the same thing we do every year. And we'll see what happens
with our free agents."

One thing working in the Mavericks' favor is that this summer can't
possibly be any worse than last year's, right?

When Deandre Jordan jilted the Mavericks, it sent the franchise into
a tailspin that made it extremely difficult to build a roster that
could be competitive in the Western Conference. And by the way, they
salvaged things pretty well, all things considered.

"It's pretty well-documented that we were put in a really tough position
this last summer," Nelson said. "Really had to kind of squeeze blood out

really nothing left on the tree when we were notified."

Jordan, Dwight Howard, Deron Williams. Those are three big names that
the Mavericks have gone after in free agency who spurned them.

It's led to the now-tiresome question of why the Mavericks haven't been
able to lure an elite-level player to pair with Dirk Nowitzki in the
twilight of his career.

"I don't know," Nelson said. "It certainly hasn't been for lack of
trying."

The list of players who could be instant difference-makers for the
Mavericks is short this summer. Howard, who has spent the last three
seasons with Houston, will be a free agent. So will Atlanta's Al Horford
and Miami's Hassen Whiteside. Any of those three centers would be a
major coup if the Mavericks could reel one of them in.

Point guard could be another area of need, pending the dicision of
Deron Williams, who can opt out of the final season of his two-year deal.

the summer.

All of this presumes that the Mavericks have no shot at the two big fish
this summer: Kevin Durant and Lebron James.

Nelson's first step is to decipher the locker room as it presently
exists. Who is allowed to leave? Who is a major priority to keep?

"We had guys who had no business being out on the basketball court that
offered to play (in the playoffs)," Nelson said. "Yeah, we're going to
take a look at guys inside our locker room, like we always do. Age

can go out and go shopping with. But I can tell you the character of
every person we have that locker. I'll climb into a foxhole with those
15 guys anytime."

of the last three summers, only about half the roster has been retained.

If the new Sacramento coach and management decide DeMarcus Cousins needs
to go - a long shot, for sure - you can be dead certain that the
Mavericks will be trying to put a package together.

Barring that, it's another summer of free-agent roulette.
