Insider: 5 questions for the Pacers entering training camp


Come all ye curious, skeptical and questioning. On Monday, the Indiana Pacers
will open the doors of Bankers Life Fieldhouse for media day. So anyone
packing a press pass and a notebook of questions (good, bad or silly) can
quiz the new-look Pacers before the team opens training camp.

Here are five big questions needing to be answered on media day:

1. If Paul George starts at power forward, isn't that wasting the talent of
one of the most elite defensive wing players?

Entering training camp, Paul George said he's no longer the same player; he's
a better version. After missing all but six games last year while
rehabilitating his broken leg, George has trained in Indianapolis and Los
Angeles to prepare for his sixth NBA season – as well as the new role of
slender 6-9 power forward.

that included George at that position. Later that same day, George revealed
his honest thoughts about the move: not thrilled about it but willing to try.

Let's concede that, after a full year removed from the injury, George still
possesses all of his speed and athleticism and, therefore, should become a
matchup nightmare for bigger, slower guys trying to defend him. However,
there's the other end that raises concern.

Wouldn't George be better placed defending the best perimeter opponents, as

big-boy basketball with LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony.

Team President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird has previously promoted
the move to power forward for George as a way to save him from defending 3s
all game. Bird switched positions later in his career, which he "loved"
because it opened up offensive opportunities. Even so, George, 25, doesn't
believe he needs to follow Bird's footsteps – just now.

and having the ability to take advantage of someone who can't stay in front
of me. I'm not going to knock it like it's just totally a terrible decision."

Still, all this emphasis on scoring digresses from the defense.

Now, George will potentially face matchups with a 7-foot Pau Gasol (Chicago),
Nene (Washington), Chris Bosh (Miami) and Paul Millsap (Atlanta). Rising out
of the west, the superstars await: Anthony Davis (New Orleans), LaMarcus
Aldridge (San Antonio) and Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers).

The Pacers can surely change the lineup and go big against teams like
Washington and Chicago, but ponder these potential quandaries: When Indiana
faces the Cleveland Cavaliers, will George match up against Kevin Love or
handle LeBron? Against Oklahoma City, should George really worry about Serge
Ibaka while former MVP Kevin Durant is wreaking havoc on the perimeter? This
may be just one positional move, but it sparks plenty of questions.

2. Where does George Hill fit in this revamped starting lineup?

Through the summer, the newest Pacers grabbed all the attention. Monta Ellis,
Jordan Hill, Chase Budinger, and even the rookies will help Indiana create a
more efficient offensive roster. Even with the starting lineup, the Pacers
will have four potential ballhandlers and shot creators on the floor at once.
So, where does last season's breakout player, George Hill, fit among the
starters?

When the smash-mouth Pacers competed for the East crown, Hill played as the
fourth option. Hill often relegated himself to spot-up shooting duty as he
watched the ball swing to his featured teammates. However last season, with
the roster beset by injuries, Hill recovered from his own pain (missing the
first 28 games with a left knee contusion) and played his best basketball as
a Pacer. The team finished 23-13 when Hill was in the starting lineup as he
played freely and aggressively. Hill scored 20 or more points 15 times last
season, a career best, and earned his first NBA triple-double on Feb. 27.

當溜馬殺進東區冠軍戰，讓很多人跌破眼鏡的時候，Hill是場上的第四進攻順位。Hill通

Though now paired again with more ball-dominant teammates, Hill's role in
2015-16 will look similar to last season, according to Vogel.

"We're going to put the ball in his hands a lot. This isn't going to be,
'Just go stand in the corner, George,' " Vogel said. "He improved last summer

ball in his hands a lot."

mid-range jumper to his skill set.

3.  Last year, the Pacers dealt with excessive injuries. How's the health of

After George fractured his leg in August  2014, the dominoes tumbled across
the roster. In total, players missed 219 games and the pain was felt most
with the lack of consistency during the season as Vogel had to trot out 14
different starting lineups.

While all 16 signed players are available for training camp, rookies Myles
Turner and Rakeem Christmas could be limited.

Turner, the No. 11 lottery pick, is working with the team's strength and
conditioning staff to minimize soreness in his knee.

"Not an injury," Vogel explained, but the work intends to strengthen "areas
that lead to pain."

possibly will be in training camp as well.

tendinitis.

4. Can Ian Mahinmi really play starter's minutes?

In the projected starting lineup, the 6-11 Ian Mahinmi gets the nod at
center. As the backup and sometimes fill-in starter to Roy Hibbert, Mahinmi
showed effectiveness last season when the Pacers wanted to go a bit smaller.
In 2014-15, Mahinmi recorded a career-high 5.8 rebounds and pulled down
double-digit rebound totals 10 times, another milestone in his seven years in
the NBA.

在預計的先發陣容中，6呎11吋的Ian Mahinmi被選為先發中鋒。去年當擔任Roy Hibbert

Though he may be a reliable rebounder and a decent rim protector (opponents
shot 45.5 percent against him as an interior defender), Mahinmi has a habit
of getting into foul trouble.

Last season, Mahinmi played 1,146 minutes and collected 172 total personal

game. In the six games Mahinmi started, he racked up 3.6 fouls a game, which
included the March 12 win over the Bucks when Mahinmi fouled out with eight
points and 10 rebounds. During those six starts, Mahinmi, labeled as the more
athletic and agile center than Hibbert, never surpassed 30 minutes on the
floor.

In August, the Pacers agreed to terms with free agent Toney Douglas. Bouncing
around the league for six seasons, Douglas has a reputation as a defender and
has already been anointed as the veteran who should teach a thing or two to
rookie point guard Joe Young during practices.

However, by signing Douglas, the Pacers' roster increased to 16 players. The

Indiana will have until Oct. 26 to make that decision and while the easy

Douglas, 29, strengthens the one position where the Pacers have a lack of
depth: lead guard.

Behind Hill, a rookie would remain as Indiana's only designated point guard.
For the past several years, Indiana has gone with three point guards on
roster (and needed them all last season), so Douglas has a real shot here.
However, someone will be packing their bags soon.
