Suns General Manager Ryan McDonough and Boston Celtics President of
Basketball Operations Danny Ainge didn’t just work together for a decade.
They became good friends.

Here’s the backdrop: The Celtics’ team plane was en route to Sacramento
last week to work out Jackson when Ainge got the word that the workout had
been cancelled. Not surprisingly, he was none too pleased. This is what he
said to Boston reporters:

He's a terrific kid and a good player. So we tried not to overreact to those
kinds of things and make a big deal of it.

"Agents and players have all sorts of motivations to get to certain places,
as we've seen in the past. Remember last year, Kris Dunn didn't want to come
here; we didn't hold it against him … And I think the same thing this time.
I don't think we were trying to penalize Josh too much, but we didn't get to
see him or talk to him face-to-face."

Asked if the cancellation made him consider passing on Jackson, Ainge said,
"No, no, no. Well, there were thoughts, yeah, I was mad. We flew
cross-country. Are you kidding me? I had to get up at 4 o'clock and fly back
home."


Ainge說

Fast forward to Friday, when Jackson and the Suns’ two second-round picks –
 Miami guard Davon Reed and Valparaiso forward Alec Peters – were introduced
to the media. McDonough was asked if the Suns might have nudged Jackson in
cancelling the workout so Boston wouldn’t take him with the No. 3 pick.

“I’d like to consult my attorney B.J. Armstrong (Jackson’s agent),”
 McDonough said with a smile.

McD微笑說

McDonough then did nothing to dissuade the notion that there might have been
some collusion between the Suns and Jackson’s representatives.

“You guys all know my history with the Celtics and the respect I have for
Danny Ainge and the organization,” McDonough said. “But I think you guys
who know me well know how competitive I am. Look, it is a competition. The
Celtics were ahead of us at No. 3 and they could have selected whoever they
wanted to. I think they got a very good player in Jayson Tatum, but that doesn
’t mean B.J. and I and … other members of my staff couldn’t talk and try
to formulate the best plan to get a player we were really high on to a place
we felt he really wanted to go and would be a great fit for him.

“We played by the rules – I guess.”



接著McD也沒有做任何事去打消大家認為"太陽是否曾經跟JJ代表有一些共謀"的念頭

McD說

"你們大家都知道我在賽爾提克的過往，而且我也很尊敬Ainge跟賽爾提克整個組織，但是
我想你們大家也知道本人的競爭力，聽著，這是一場競賽，賽爾提克在我們前面是第三順
位，他們能選擇他們想要的人，而且我認為他們最終得到一個非常優秀球員--Tatum，但這
不意味著之前B.J.不能跟我和所有我的員工們溝通且嘗試建構最好的計畫，去為了得到一
位球員是我們有著非常高評價+認為他很想要來這裡+認為這裡對他來說是非常好的歸宿"

For his part, Jackson said not working out for Boston was “just bad
scheduling. If I could have, I probably would have worked out for them. But I
think everything worked out for the best.”


JJ說

"就只是規劃不良，如果可以我也許會跟賽爾提克試訓，但我認為任何試訓就要做到最好"

A video of Peters’ emotional reaction to being taken by the Suns with the
No. 54 pick went viral following the draft. In the video, Peters buries his
head in his hands upon his selection so nobody could see him “tearing up.”

There was good reason for the burst of feelings. Peters couldn’t participate
in any of the pre-draft workouts because of a stress fracture he suffered in
his right foot in March.

“It was extremely difficult,” Peters said. “It kind of feels like out of
sight, out of mind. Everybody is traveling to different teams, and I’m

hard but at the end of the day I knew I was going to get that opportunity.
Hearing my name at the end made it all worth it.”
