              Amtrak has signed a set of contracts totaling $1.8
        billion with manufacturing company Alstom for the design and
        building process of 28 new high-speed trains.

              The Avelia Liberty trains, which are capable of speeds
        up to 186 mph, will run along the Northeast Corridor between
        Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York and Boston, covering
        roughly 450 miles. Alstom will provide Amtrak with technical
        support and maintenance for the new trains, which are expected
        to begin service by the end of 2022.

              The new trains will replace Amtrak’s Acela trains in
        hope of cutting down travel times and adding capacity – Amtrak
        passenger numbers increased from 2.4 million in 2002 to 3.5
        million in 2014. The Avelia Liberty will have one-third more
        passenger seats than the Acela.

              “As more people rely on Amtrak, we need modernized
        equipment and infrastructure to keep the region moving,”
        Chairman of the Amtrak Board of Directors Anthony Coscia
        said in a statement. “These trainsets will build on the
        popularity and demand of the current Acela Express and move
        this company into the future as a leader in providing
        world-class transportation.”

        Amtrak 跟 Alstom簽了個18億美金（約合台幣 570億）的合約，
        將購入28組新車。

        新車稱為Avelia Liberty trains ，速度將高達 186mph （約合
        300 kph ），主要將服務美國東北華盛頓─費城─紐約及波士頓
        這條長約 450英里的走廊。預計從2022年底開始將可開始提供服
        務。

        這些取代原本 Acela列車的新生代，將可以縮短行車時間並增加
        運能。Avelia Liberty的容量較 Acela大了 1/3，以因應這個路
        段(？)從2002年的 240萬人次，成長至2014年的 350萬人次。

        「既然有更多旅客仰賴這條路線，我們當然需要改善設備及設施
        來維持。」Amtrak的Anthony Ciscia [職稱請求] 說，「新車將
        引領Amtrak作為世界級的運輸業者走向未來」(!?)
