In a stunning move, the Red Sox announced Tuesday night that they have hired
Dave Dombrowski as president of baseball operations, effective immediately.
Ben Cherington declined the opportunity to continue as general manager but
has agreed to assist Dombrowski during the transition.

Dombrowski, who was replaced as the president and general manager of the
Detroit Tigers earlier this month, worked for Red Sox owner John Henry when
Henry (who also owns the Globe) owned the Florida Marlins.

Henry said in June he expected Cherington to remain as GM “for years to come.
” That proved to be about two months.

Dombrowski has been a maker of big trades with star players in his career.
His task now is to find a taker for left fielder Hanley Ramirez.

With the Tigers in a tailspin after the All-Star break, Dombrowski traded ace
David Price and slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. The Tigers suddenly
replaced Dombrowski with Al Avila.

In a statement at the time, Tigers owner Mike Ilitch said, “I’ve decided to
release Dave from his contract in order to afford him the time to pursue
other career opportunities.”

Rumors began to percolate quickly about Dombrowski joining the Red Sox, who
have been in a season-long funk in a year in which much was expected with the
acquisitions of Ramirez, Pablo Sandoval, Rick Porcello, and Wade Miley.

But the team Cherington helped rebuild did not jell and is mired in last
place in the American League East.
