Whit Merrifieldebuted with the Royals in 2016, one year after they won the World Series. Now it's apparent the Royals expect him to be on their roster when they're ready to return to the postseason. Merrifield and the Royals are nearing a four-year contract extension through what would be his salary arbitration years, one source told MLB.com Sunday evening. The club has not confirmed the deal, which will be worth $16.25 million and includes $2 million in performance bonuses, according to the source. The Royals have not confirmed the negotiations, but another source close to the situation told MLB.com on Sunday night that while nothing is signed yet, the deal is close to the finish line and could be completed in the next few days. While Merrifield trade rumors surfaced last offseason, Royals general manager Dayton Moore has said for the last year or so that Merrifield will be part of the Royals' long-term future. "We've pretty much made it clear we want Whit Merrifield to be part of our team," Moore told MLB.com at the Winter Meetings. Merrifield is coming off a season in which he led the Majors in hits (192) and stolen bases (45), while establishing himself as one of the premier super utility players in the sport. Merrifield, 30, did not reach the Majors until age 27, thus shifting the usual calculation on what he could earn during his prime years ----- Sent from JPTT on my Asus ASUS_Z01KD. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc), 來自: 101.12.181.72 ※ 文章網址: https://www.ptt.cc/bbs/Royals/M.1548645351.A.FE8.html
