原題：He was given the opportunity to direct Jaws and became one of the youngest
directors ever___ the domestic record for box office gross.
我個人認為是(C )to break。解析說明如下：
A. broke 不行是因為前面已經有became這個動詞，兩個動詞不能並行使用，除非簡化句
子，改成分詞構句或是加連接詞。
B. breaking 用文法分析，breaking 可視為He was given the opportunity to direct
Jaws and became one of the youngest directors that ever broke the domestic
record for box office gross.的簡化。改成分詞構句，把 that去掉，
broke改成breaking。
其實「最高級 + N」後面有時用Ving也是可以的。美國不少網站都有這種用法。
但這種說法也許不是正式的文法，因此考試時還是避免選Ving。
Reyes is the youngest position player breaking into full-season ball in the
Minors, having just turned 18 on Feb. 20.

看了上面的句子，老外確實有用 最高級 + N + Ving的用法。
但因為「最高級adj + N + ever」後面常慣用加to，是比較正式的文法，
因此考試時建議用 to V。
C. to break 我認為這裡的to break的to可以視為(be able) to的簡化。因
此這句可以還原為：He was given the opportunity to direct Jaws and
became one of the youngest directors that ever (were able) to break the
domestic record for box office gross.
補充一下，最高級常考的文法句型有：
the superlative + (N) + of/among/in ...
the superlative + (N) + ever + to V ...
the first/last + (N) + ever + to V
D. that break 除了時態用現在式而不能選之外。還有如果用關代that，應該放到ever的
前面，而不是放到ever的後面。
以上的文法分析是我個人主觀的心得，僅供參考。
