DENVER – Sergio Romo, a core member of three World Series champion bullpens
and a significant late-inning presence, is going back to San Francisco for
tests on an aching right elbow.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said that Romo wasn’t available to pitch in the
club’s 10-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field Wednesday night.
Romo told trainers that he woke up Wednesday with elbow discomfort, one day
after he warmed up in the bullpen but did not appear in a game.
For his presence and peace of mind, he has to get it looked at,” Bochy
said. “We know Sergio. Occasionally it flares up on him. He usually needs a
couple days and he’s fine. We’ll know more tomorrow.”
The Giants have made a habit of slow-playing Romo in spring training because
of his history of elbow inflammation and the fact he doesn’t load up his arm
by throwing much in the offseason. Romo didn’t make his debut this spring
until midway through the exhibition season, but his slider was as filthy as
ever in a handful of appearances.
Bochy did not speculate on a potential roster move.
