Clippers crush Spurs behind Griffin’s monster outing

The Spurs (30-18) never had a chance. That was Manu Ginobili’s synopsis of
their 105-85 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers. It was hard to
argue after the Spurs led for a grand total of 29 seconds, by a whopping one
point, en route to their most lopsided home loss of the season. Coach Gregg
Popovich called it a butt whipping and questioned his team’s competitiveness
once again, while Ginobili was baffled. “It worries me,” he said of the
Spurs’ lethargic play. “We were distracted.”

Blake Griffin most definitely was not distracted, tormenting the Spurs with
31 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. He combined with DeAndre Jordan (19
rebounds) to punish the Spurs on the boards, where L.A. (33-15) enjoyed a
massive 56-36 edge. It was a microcosm of a game in which the Clippers pretty
much controlled every facet of the game, including intangibles like effort
and execution. Griffin was at the forefront, outscoring the Spurs’
 frontcourt trio of Tim Duncan (four points), Boris Diaw (nine) and Tiago
Splitter (eight) by himself.

Despite having been soundly outplayed in the first half, the Spurs were still
down just seven with 1:16 left on Kawhi Leonard’s 3-pointer. But the
Clippers responded with a demoralizing 7-0 run, including Chris Paul’s
28-foot 3-pointer just before the buzzer, to go up 14 and essentially knock
the Spurs out for good even with a full half still to play.

* Stat of the night: The so-called Big Three of Duncan, Ginobili and Tony
Parker had one of the worst joint performances of their 13 seasons together,
combining for 18 points on 6-for-22 shooting with eight turnovers. Duncan’s
output was a season-low, Ginobili missed on 5 of 10 free throws, and Parker
continued his mediocre season by shooting 2 for 10.

* It was an impressive bounce-back performance from the Clippers, who lost at
New Orleans on Friday despite the absence of injured Pelicans All-Star
Anthony Davis. The difference wasn’t lost on Clippers coach Doc Rivers, and
it was apparent from the start: “(Assistant coach) Mike Woodson turned to me
two minutes into the game and asked, ‘That’s the team that played last
night?’ I responded, ‘No, it wasn’t.’ We had great focus and our pace was
fantastic.”
