Parker struggles to find form in 14th season

Tony Parker classified the latest subpar outing (five points, 2-for-10
shooting, three turnovers) in what is shaping up to be his worst season in a
decade as “a bump in the road.”

Whether or not Parker actually believed that after being soundly outplayed by
Clippers All-Star Chris Paul in a 105-85 thrashing at the AT&T Center on
Saturday remains to be seen. What doesn’t is that time is rapidly running
out, with little more than two months remaining until the postseason, for
Parker to rediscover the rhythm that has been so glaringly elusive in his
14th NBA campaign

Much has been written about Parker’s woes in recent weeks, with any number
of theories as to why his production has dropped: Injuries, particularly the
nagging hamstring strain that wiped out the entire month of December; the
increased role of Kawhi Leonard; the pervasive staleness of the Spurs’
 once-humming offense, only part of which can be blamed on their point guard.

All of which has no doubt played a role. As Spurs coach Gregg Popovich
frequently points out, things that happen on the basketball court can rarely
be pinpointed to any one particular reason, no matter how much fans and the
media would like to believe otherwise.

2003-04. (His raw averages of 14.2 points and 4.8 assists are his lowest

I could go on, but you probably get the point: Parker’s efficiency and pure
impact have been poor this season independent of any exterior factors.
Especially given that Parker is averaging about the same amount of touches as
last season, 2.54 touches per minute to 2.61.

It’s a far cry from where he was two years ago, wrapping up a dominant
January in which he averaged 21.9 points and 7.9 assists while shooting 56.3
percent to earn his first Player of the Month award. And with his 33rd
birthday rapidly approaching, and more than 1,200 regular-season, playoff and
FIBA games under his belt, it’s fair to wonder if that level of consistent
dominance is now beyond him.

That’s got to be frustrating given that this was supposed to be a
rejuvenated Parker after skipping international duty for the first time in
four years. Instead, he’s already missed as many games as last season with
34 still to go, and his performance fluctuates from game to game, sometimes
even half to half.

If Parker is going to turn the corner, a good place to start would be the
mid-range jumper that he worked so hard to develop over the course of his
career.

Parker is shooting just 39.7 percent from 16 to 23 feet, where he has more
attempts than any other area. (Which is telling in and of itself.) He hasn’t
shot that poorly since 2011-12, when he offset that by converting at nearly
70 percent around the rim. But with his accuracy on his bread-and-butter
floaters and layups down to 62 percent as well, not even his career-best 51.1
percent on 3-pointers has been enough to prop up Parker’s offense.

Another area of decline is his aggressiveness going to the basket. While
Parker still ranks among the better scorers on drives to the rim per NBA.com’
s tracking stats, his average of 8.4 points per 48 minutes on such plays is
roughly two fewer than last season. There’s also been a noticeable decline
in Parker’s transition offense, perhaps his most defining offensive weapon
outside his aforementioned tear drop.

This isn’t the first time a Spurs pillar has had to face doubts about his
performance thanks to advancing age. Now we’ll see if Parker can answer as
well as Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili have.
