上次「轉折詞你用對了嗎？」提到Furthermore的用法，今天再分享一個也
是同學常會用的不是很精準的轉折詞：In other words. 這個詞問每個同學
都會知道中文就是「換句話說，換言之」，但是後面接的句子真的就只是換
句話說這麼簡單嗎？
我們先看字典的定義：
1) 韋氏字典（Merriam-Webster）:used to introduce a statement that
repeats what has been said in a different and usually a simpler or
more exact way
2) Cambridge Dictionary: toexplainit moreclearly
3) Macmillan Dictionary: usedforintroducinganother way ofsayingor
explainingsomething,especiallya moresimpleway
從三個字典的解釋不難看出，In other words後面要接的是更清楚、更簡單
的敘述，不單單只是簡單的換句話說而已。
看完定義我們再看幾個例句更能確定使用方法：
1) She said the movie was a bit predictable." "In other words, she
didn't like it.” 她說那部電影劇情有點好猜。換句話說，她不喜歡那部
電影。
2) He waseconomicalwith thetruth– in other words, helied. 他沒說多少
實話—換言之，他在撒謊。
3) The tax only affects people on incomes of over $200,000 -in other
words, the very rich. 稅制只影響到收入超過20萬的人，換句話說，非常
有錢的那些人。
從以上例句可以看得出來 In other words後面接的句子都是前面句子更清
楚、更簡化的概念，所以同學在使用的時候要注意句子前後有沒有這樣的概
念，如果沒有的話，那寧可不要放，直接接下一個句子即可。
來看看同學寫的句子, 想想看In other words用在這裡合適嗎？有更好的用
法嗎？
First of all, it is the same interest that can help students make
friends more easily. In other words, in a sport team, students
share the same interest and in this situation, students can talk
about the same topic and feel associated with each of the team
members.
這裡同學感覺是在套用模版，所以硬要用In other words, 但後面的句子沒
有簡化或更清楚的概念，這裡比較好的transition word 可能是For
example.
相信同學看過以上的定義以及例句，應該對於In other words用法有更進一
步的了解，下次在寫作時就不會用錯了！
