大家好，我是J2.
中文的破折號，對應到英文是dash, 但英文又分成en dash跟em dash, 功能
不同，所以一定要搞清楚，平常在線上做TPO閱讀時尤其重要，下面會慢慢
解釋原因。
首先我們先把這些長短不一長得很像的標點符號分清楚，其實還有一個比en
dash更短的叫hyphen. 以下把這三胞胎分開好好的了解一下：
1. hyphen -
中文叫連字號，顧名思義是連接兩個字或兩個字以上用的，例如short-
term, self-restraint, twenty-one, well-behaved, nitrogen-fixing
bacteria, host-parasite relationships, well-to-do
2. en dash –
叫en dash因為跟英文字母n一樣長，功能主要是表達「範圍」，有時可解讀
成to, 例如 10–12pm, 100–200
3. em dash —
這三個裡面最長的，長度跟英文字母m一樣長，所以叫em dash, 這個是在做
托福閱讀最最需要知道的標點符號了，因為他通常會帶出「補充資訊」，就
是要幫我們解釋我們看不懂的那個專有名詞拉！如果在句中出現兩個em
dash, 這兩個可以用逗號或是括號取代。
例如：
Dark, leafy greens—such as spinach, kale, and chard—are an
important part of a healthy diet.
回到最開始提到的，為何做TPO時，知道em dash很重要？因為很多能做TPO
的網站像是考滿分，畢竟不是官方的，所以有時會出現typo, 這個錯誤是幾
乎只要有em dash的，都會變成hyphen, 所以閱讀時要特別注意一下。
幫同學整理幾個TPO錯誤的例子：
TPO 4 Deer Populations of the Puget Sound
First, the major predators of deer-wolves, cougar, and lynx-have
been greatly reduced in numbers.
正確的應該是：
First, the major predators of deer—wolves, cougar, and lynx—have
been greatly reduced in numbers.
TPO 4 Petroleum Resources
Continued sedimentation-the process of deposits’ settling on the
sea bottom-buries the organic matter…
正確的應該是：
Continued sedimentation—the process of deposits’ settling on the
sea bottom—buries the organic matter…
Offshore drilling platforms extend the search for oil to the ocean
’s continental shelves-those gently sloping submarine regions at
the edges of the continents.
正確的應該是：
Offshore drilling platforms extend the search for oil to the ocean
’s continental shelves—those gently sloping submarine regions at
the edges of the continents.
有了以上的幾個例子，之後看TPO閱讀時應該比較能分出差別。
看到hyphen時，稍微想一下真的是hyphen還是其實是em dash, 才不會理解
錯誤喔！不過正式考試就不用擔心了！
