從川普的 ”American Carnage”學衍生單字

近來的美國校園槍聲此起彼落，前總統川普因此呼籲讓經過訓練的教師
攜帶隱藏式武器進校園。一時之間，又讓人回想起他的諸多驚世之語。
川普當年的就職演說也是語不驚人死不休，其中一句，
”This American carnage stops right here and stops right now. ”
描述了一幅美國人民陷入貧困、工廠倒閉、毒品泛濫的慘象；
他用 “carnage大屠殺”這個血腥氣瀰漫的字來形容美國當時的狀況，
並聲稱他將終結這一切。
事實上5年後的今天，真正的American Carnage---校園槍擊事件卻不減反增。
今天只教學不談政治，就用這個字教大家carn-這個字根可以衍生出那些常見
的單字字串，讓各位版友體會字根對記憶單字的幫助，以免字到考時方恨少。

在歷屆總統的就職演說中，從沒有出現過 carnage 這個不尋常的措辭，媒體和
評論家因而議論紛紛。《華盛頓郵報》列出了24個川普在就職演說中用到的詞，
並指出，這些詞在美國歷史上任何一屆總統的就職演說中都沒有出現過。
除了carnage，這些詞還包括：bleed 流血；sad 可悲；tombstones 墓碑等。
Carnage 的用法
This word was taken over straight from French (a Latin-based language),
and has mostly referred to large-scale killing in wartime. But carnage
needn't refer only to slaughter on the battlefield. With tens of
thousands of people dying each year in automobile accidents, it's
appropriate to speak of carnage on the nation's highways. And those
concerned about the effects of the violence we see constantly on TV
and movie screens may refer to that as carnage as well.

雖然 carnage 在美國總統就職演說中不常見，但是在 GRE, SAT 等考試裡，
卻是必背單字之一。
carn- 字根意思是 flesh (肉)。常見的衍生字包括：
★carnation 康乃馨，[荷蘭] 石竹；
因為這花的顏色跟肉的顏色接近，所以用了 carn- 這個字根。
★carnival 嘉年華會，狂歡節；
carnival 的字根意思是「遠離肉類」，源自於 天主教徒在慶祝
四旬齋節 (Lent) 前數日期間的飲宴狂歡。由於教徒在四旬齋節
時為懷念在荒野中苦修的耶穌而吃齋，所以趁齋前吃肉飲宴。
在美國以紐奧爾良 (New Orleans) 地方舉行四旬齋前一日
(Mardi Gras) 的狂歡較為著名。
★carrion (動物的) 腐肉；腐屍
★carnivorous 肉食性的
草食 herbivorous；雜食 omnivorous
★incarnate 具有肉體的，成為人形的，化身的
a devil incarnate = an incarnate fiend 魔鬼的化身；
