同學應該都知道英文的文章每段的第一句話叫主題句(topic sentence), 顧名思義就是會
告訴你這段的主題一個句子，作者藉由這句話開門見山地告訴你，整段的重點、主旨。

但光是知道主題還不夠，如果你能知道主題句裡的controlling idea, 更能有預期心理，
抓到整個段落「接下來走向」。The controlling idea shows the direction the
paragraph will take.

先用幾個簡單的句子來練習一下：
Topic Sentence:here are many reasons why pollution in ABC Town is the
worst in the world.
The topic is "pollution in ABC Town is the worst in the world" and the
controlling idea is "many reasons."
Topic Sentence:To be an effective CEO requires certain characteristics.
The topic is "To be an effective CEO" and the controlling idea is "certain
characteristics.”

簡單的句子看完，我們來看幾個托福的句子，剛好上週日有同學考到Photography and
the Pictorial Weeklies這篇文章，是重複不少次的舊題且難度頗高，挑個幾段的主題句
讓大家練習一下吧！

第三段主題句：Beyond supplying them with subjects, photography also
influenced what some illustrators drew and how they drew it.
Topic: Beyond supplying them with subjects, photography also influenced other
things.
Controlling idea: what some illustrators drew and how they drew it.
知道controlling idea後，同學也可以brainstorm一下可能的點有什麼？也就是猜猜看攝
影會如何影響插畫家繪畫？多想也能培養主動思考能力喔！

根據主題句，段落接下來應該要講攝影影響繪畫主題以及繪畫方式，文章後來確實有提到
包括強調燈光的明暗、陰影等等。

再試試看第四段主題句：The influence of photography can also be felt in a
shift in the general character of popular illustration that occurred in the
pictorial weeklies. 同學們可以先想想controlling idea是什麼。

Topic: The influence of photography can also be felt
controlling idea：shift in the general character
後來提到的shift in the general character是 from humor to greater formality
and dignity 從幽默或是漫畫的形式變得比較正式。

知道controlling idea還有另一個好處。 同學常提到一個閱讀問題是：段落很長，常常
讀到後面就忘了前面，只能記得這句在說什麼，跟前面讀到的連貫不起來。
.
有controlling idea的話，讀到的資訊是有「連貫性」的，所以比較不會讀完這個句子就
又忘了前面，或者根本不知道整段作者想表達什麼。我也常跟同學說，如果段落看完忘了
到底整段想說什麼，那就回去看主題句，更準確的說，就是看主題句的controlling
idea.
