赤崁樓原為1653年荷治時期興建的歐式建築：「普羅民遮城（Provintia，
荷蘭文的永恆之意）」，又稱為赤嵌樓、紅毛樓（荷蘭人毛髮為紅色）
與番仔樓（台語），是當時台灣的省城，同時為統治的中心位置。
目前為國定古蹟，也是遊客來台南必訪的景點之一。
根據考證，赤崁兩個字是來自平埔語的赤崁社（saccam）。
荷蘭人來台後以五匹花布取得了赤崁社的土地，
而原先赤崁社的平埔族原住民則搬遷到了現今的新市一帶，並改稱為「新港社」
不過，現在看到的赤崁樓並非普羅民遮城，而是歷經了鄭氏、清代後，
在19世紀後期陸續於普羅民遮城上興建的海神廟、
文昌閣以及大南門城內遷來九座贔屭碑等建築的混合體，總稱為：赤崁樓。
目前的赤崁樓以紅色為主體結構，四周有仿古風的矮牆圍繞。
不過，前陣子台南市府的赤崁文化園區競圖已完成，
未來可能會拆除圍牆，並讓基地軸線轉為向西，面向海洋

於赤崁樓2009年2月份整修後將受降兩字改為議和。

只要有水池就會養錦鯉，這大概是公家機關慣例。除了好看之外，
錦鯉的生存力也很驚人，所以被大量用在飼養在景點的水池中

樓下的石碑就是大南門城內遷來九座贔屭碑，
據說是清乾隆皇帝為了表彰福康安平定林爽文事件，
特賜十塊以金門「麻糬石」雕刻而成的龜趺御碑。
每塊碑高3.1公尺，寬1.4公尺，其中四座全刻滿文，
四座全刻漢文，二座漢滿文合刻

不過，龜趺御碑運抵台南府時，其中一龜座不慎掉入港內，
就另以砂岩仿造一座，原座直到1911年才被台南漁民撈起，供奉在南廠保安宮內。
至於碑文的部分，赤崁樓內目前保有的是四座滿文、四座漢文以及一座滿漢文共九座，
而最後一座經歷了數次遷徙，輾轉漢到了嘉義，
最後安置於現址嘉義公園為福康安紀功碑。

這裡說個典故：雖然乾隆賜的碑叫做「龜趺御碑」，但實際上贔屭並不是烏龜，
而是龍生九子不成龍中的老六。在上古時代常馱著三山五嶽，
在江河湖海裡興風作浪。後來大禹治水時收服了它，它服從大禹的指揮，
推山挖溝，疏遍河道，為治水作出了貢獻。
（編按：其實這樣形容起來，也是一隻很大的烏龜啊）
不過，傳說歸傳說，現在的贔屭座可是鳥兒曬太陽的好場所呢！

鄭成功畫像。很多人對台灣的鄭氏時期的印象都是以鄭成功為主。
但其實鄭成功本人在由荷蘭人手中攻取台灣後不到一年就因病身故，
所以鄭氏時期主要是以其子鄭經為領導，
而輔佐鄭經的就是金庸筆下的天地會總舵主陳永華（化名：陳近南）

熱蘭遮城日誌，是荷蘭統治臺灣時期的基本史料，
主要是關於荷蘭人在臺灣的各種活動，在十七世紀時以荷蘭語撰寫成，

所謂的五文昌，又稱為五文昌夫子，
是道教奉祀的五位與讀書相關的神明，而這裡供奉的是五文昌中的魁斗星君

在道教信仰中，因為「屈曲相鈞，似文字之書」，被認為是主宰文運之神

清光緒時期，普羅民遮城整個傾倒後，原本在其稜堡上方蓋了五子祠，
後來又因為颱風毀壞，一直到日本時代才由日人挖掘出當年稜堡的遺跡

前身為檨仔林街的「引心書院」，創建於清嘉慶年間，後來曾改為臺灣縣書院。
之後因該書院已經廢置，安平縣知縣沈受謙遂於光緒十二年（1886年）
於今赤崁樓西側購地設置蓬壺書院
