由於小弟服務的學校剛開學，忙了一段時間，而且今天還很煩的補班QQ
今天終於完成了翻譯老史自傳第三章家庭的翻譯之第一篇
這一章總共有四篇，包含：母親、父親、祖父、祖母
之後學期不忙的時候會慢慢翻譯其他部分

之前monmo大大建議可以參考對岸網友翻譯的資料
大致瀏覽感覺還不賴，但怕會影響我英文的進步XD
所以我很快就關掉，之後就繼續自己翻譯

感謝之前的大大說我上一篇翻譯老史家鄉很通順
我是覺得還是有點卡
不過這一次就特別打出英文與中文對照表
仍然是希望大家給予我一些建言，讓我英文能夠更加進步

We don’t get to choose where or to when we are born. We are so fortunate
in this country, even in bad times, to have opportunities that many people
in the world couldn’t imagine. I thank God every day that the stork dropped
me in the USA, at the home of Jack and Clemy Stockton.
我們無法選擇出生在哪或出生在哪個家庭。可是，我們很幸運的出生在這個國家，在這
個景氣不佳的時期，有許多世人想不到的機會。我每天都在謝天，感謝上帝當時派遣送
子鳥讓我出生在美國，尤其是成為Jack與Clemy的兒子、家人。

Mom’s full name is Clementine Josephine Frei Stockton. She was the youngest
of fifteen children born to Clemens Christian and Philomela Uhlorn Frei.
Both were German-speaking Swiss nationals. Because he died before I was born,
I never knew my Grandpa Frei. I am told he was a small and frail man who was
sick most of Mom’s childhood. He must have possessed a little scrappiness
at one time, however, because he came to American alone at age thirteen,
never return to Switzerland. Upon his arrival he was immediately robbed of
what little money he had. He managed, nonetheless, to complete his
cross-country journey to Idaho and become one the successful pioneer farmers
on the Camas Prairie.
母親的全名為Clementine Josephine Frei Stockton。她在家中十五個兄弟姊妹當中排
行老么。至於外公Clemens Christian與外婆Philomela Uhlorn Frei，兩人都是德裔瑞
士國籍的人。我沒有見過外公Frei，因為他在我出生前便已駕鶴西歸。有人跟我說，在
母親的孩提時，外公就是個身體虛弱的小個男。他13歲時就一個人來到美國，因此他擁
有強烈的鬥志，而且他再也沒有回到瑞士。當他抵達美國時便立馬被搶走了他身上的一
丁點金錢。儘管如此，他設法完成他的跨國旅行，並且抵達愛達荷，後來成為了一個成
功的拓荒者、百合科種植的農夫。

The name Philomela means love of work, so Grandma was appropriately named.
Raising a family of that size on a farm with an ailing husband must have
been a heavy yoke. Thankfully, she was of sturdy stock, living to a ripe
old age of ninety-six, with bacon lard as a primary staple in her diet.
She prayed the Rosary often over the crops and before meals, as her faith
was her true staple. By the time Mom came around, her brothers, many of
who were old enough to be her dad, shouldered much of the farm work while
Grandma cooked for them.
外婆Philomela的名字意涵為熱愛工作，而且她很適合這個名字。與身體虛弱的丈夫經
營這種規模的農場，並且肩負撫育子女，是個很重的枷鎖。慶幸的是，年屆96歲的外婆
是個結實的支柱，培根油則是她的主食。她的信仰正是她的主食，在用餐之前，她會閱
讀玫瑰經祈禱能夠有豐盛的收成。母親誕生的時候，她兄長們的年紀都足以當她的父親
了，他們負擔起了農場的工作，而外婆則照顧與為他們料理。

The soil on their land was a sight to behold. Even our untrained, big-city
eyes could detect the richness of the earth on the unirrigated farmland. We
could almost feel the cool, moist clumps of black dirt just by looking
across the fields and breathing the fresh air. In later years, when one of
my uncles dug a basement by hand, he bragged, “I didn’t come across a
single rock.”
他們的土壤令人印象深刻。即使像我們這種都市俗也都看得出他們尚未灌溉的土壤有多
肥沃。僅是通過田野而已，我們可以感受到黑土濕潤的涼感，以及呼吸到新鮮空氣。我
其中一個舅舅在往後幾年挖了一個地下室，他吹噓說：「俺沒有遇到任何一個石頭。」

Mom had to grow up quickly on the farm. She did much of the work as her
brothers went to war, got married, or otherwise moved on with their lives.
Way ahead of her time, as a ten-year-old girl, she drove the tractor, worked
in the field, and milked the cows. As a self-confessed tomboy she did find
time to play basketball in high school and was apparently very good.
在農場裡，母親不得不迅速長大。因為她的兄長去打仗、或是結婚、或是離鄉背井去過
自己的生活，所以母親在農場裡做了許多工作。當她僅僅是個十歲小女孩時，她就得在
田裡駕駛拖拉機，或者是擠牛奶。她自認自己是個男人婆，在就讀高中時期，她總是能
找到時間去打籃球，而且她還打得非常出色。

Thankfully, most of Mom’s siblings lived long enough to provide me an
opportunity  to arrange a special family gathering. In 2001, with the help
of an air charter company, Nada and I were able to bring most Mom’s siblings
and their spouses to Salt Lake to watch a Jazz game. They enjoyed the sights,
sounds, and taste of the city. A chartered tour bus chauffeured these small
town folks around our “huge” city. They ate at Jazz owner Larry Miller’s
new restaurant, the Mayan, where to the amazement of the clan, divers plunged
from high perches into pools of water. They capped there trip nicely by
watching a Jazz victory, a first opportunity for most of them. My aunts and
uncles took pictures on the floor of the Delta Center. Uncle Al even made it
back to the training room, where he and Karl Malone chatted like old
classmates. He had had a storied life in the service working behind enemy
lines (basically a spy) during World War II. If Karl had known that then,
they would still be talking. It was a thrill for me to see them hit it off,
and I know Uncle Al will never forget it. It was also a great feeling to see
Mom having such a great time with all her big brothers and sisters.
感激的是，我大部份的舅舅與阿姨們都長命百歲（誤），所以我才有機會安排這個特別
的家庭聚會。2001年時，我們包了一架飛機接送了母親的大部份手足與他們的配偶前來
鹽湖城看爵士隊的比賽。他們很享受這座城市的景色、喧鬧聲、美食。而巴士司機則是
帶領我的親屬們遊覽這座大城市。他們享用了Larry Miller開的新餐廳—瑪雅，其中一
項高處跳水的活動更讓他們感到驚訝。在看了爵士贏得這場比賽後，他們紛紛對此表達
致意，當中有些人甚至是第一次有這個機會來看比賽。我的阿姨與舅舅們紛紛在達美中
心留影紀念。回到訓練室後，Al舅舅跟Karl Malone聊得津津有味，彷彿他們是老同學
一般。Al舅舅有過一個傳奇的故事，在第二次世界大戰曾經為盟軍深入敵線（基本上就
是間諜的意思）。如果Karl Malone知道的話，他們肯定會聊到三更半夜。我很高興看
到Al舅舅與Karl Malone相見如故，而且我知道舅舅永生難忘。更開心的是，母親與她
的大哥大姐們有一段愉快的時光。

Mom remained close to her family long after she left the prairie for the
big city. It had been clear to the family for a long time that young Clemy
had certainly inherited Philomela’s love of work, but it was going to be
on the farm. Immediately after high school, she followed in her big sister
Aggie’s footsteps and went into nursing. She moved to Spokane, graduated
from nurses training, and began working at Sacred Heart Hospital.
在離鄉背井後，母親仍與她的家人們保持親密的關係。很明顯地，年輕的母親在農場
工作時，就有Philomela外婆熱愛工作的影子。高中畢業後，母親跟隨Aggie阿姨的腳
步進入了護理界。她搬到了史波坎，從護理訓練裡畢業，而且開始在Sacred Heart醫
院工作。
