歷經三天的閱讀與翻譯，而且在可愛的英語系學妹幫助之下
在我翻譯大部份的文章，並請益學妹一些較艱難的部分
我們聯手將「對於我來說是」艱難的part 2 父親篇完成了

隨著英文翻譯的技巧越來越進步，頭腦的運作也越來越靈巧
希望能持續加強英文，認識越來越多的英文單字

在此仍然列上中英對照，希望大家能不吝嗇地給予我一些指教

Dad’s full name is John Houston Stockton. Most people call him
Jack, and his story is entirely different than Mom’s. He was born
John Houston Stockton (who answered to Houston or Zeb) and
M’Liss Finnegan Stockton. He was a Spokane boy born and raised.
He grew up in a house practically on Gonzaga’s campus in the
shadows of the football stadium on Desmet Avenue. In fact, in the
next eighty years he moved a total of four blocks from there to his
current residence. He did, however, have a couple of adventures
along way that gave him a taste of the rest of the world. In 1945,
at the end of his high-school experience, he volunteered for the
Coast Guard and underwent training for the invasion of Japan.
Dad proudly boasts that “they heard I was coming, so they
surrendered.”
父親的全名是John Houston Stockton。大家都叫他神奇（誤）Jack，
而且他的故事完全不同於母親的。他的父母是祖父John Houston
Stockton（祖父也跟我父親同名，但通常人家叫祖父Houston或Zeb），
祖母是M’Liss Finnegan。父親出生與成長在史波坎。他們家實際上是位
在岡薩加大學裡德斯梅特大道上的美式足球場旁。後來，在往後的八十
年，他搬到四個街區外。不過，父親倒是有幾段值得拿來說嘴的壯舉。
在高中畢業後，他自願加入海巡署當二兵（誤），並且阻止日本的侵略。
父親總在唱秋說：「那群東洋日本佬一聽到老子的出現，都嚇得屁滾尿流
舉白旗了。」

After the war he was assigned to lighthouse duty in Chesapeake Bay
near Portsmouth, Virginia. One of his first assignments was the repair
of a frozen and long-since-silenced foghorn. The old timers had tried
many methods to resurrect the horn’s crucial blare with no success.
Eventually they decided to send the new guy up on the roof with a rope
around his waist and a hammer in his hand to literally beat the
foghorn and its sheets of ice into compliance. Dad struck true with his
trusty hammer and released the full force of the horn with its ten-mile
range directly into his left ear. He couldn’t hear the laughter of his older
companions for weeks, but it was assessed a job well done.
二次大戰結束後，父親被分配到為維吉尼亞州普次茅斯附近的切薩匹克灣
燈塔服役。他的第一個任務是維修年久失修又還沒退冰的霧笛。老鳥們嘗
試了許多方法，可是都無法修復這重要的霧迪。最後，他們決定派這個菜
鳥上去修理霧笛以及清理上層的積冰，父親把繩子綁在腰上，手裡拿著鐵
鎚。父親的鐵鎚不偏不倚地打醒秀逗的霧笛，不只讓許久沒有運作的霧笛
重現聲響，方圓十哩內響徹雲霄，巨響還直接灌進他的左耳。雖然他幾個
星期內聽不到同事對他的訕笑，但無疑地，他辦到了！

While stationed in Virginia, Dad became somewhat of a genealogy
student and discovered that the Stockton family tree took root in the
counties of Sligo and Roscommon in Ireland, landing several
generations later smack at the bottom of the Declaration of Independence.
駐紮在維吉尼亞州的那段時間，父親開始變成「族譜學」的研究生，而且
他還得知Stockton家人的祖先來自於愛爾蘭的斯萊戈郡與羅斯康芒郡。而
他們移民過來美國時，剛好過了美國獨立時的震盪期，時局也逐步穩定。

The signature of Richard Stockton, son of another John Stockton, can
be seen clearly and legibly on the Declaration. His penmanship, however,
was much better than his reputation. History tells us that he was captured
and tortured by the British. As a result, he recanted his loyalty to his new
country and pledged allegiance to the king of England, becoming the only
Declaration signer to do so.
Richard Stockton是我的祖先也與我同名的John Stockton的兒子，可以在
獨立宣言上看見他的暨清楚又清晰的署名。不過，他的筆跡比他的名聲好一
百倍。歷史記載，他曾經被英國逮捕且嚴刑銬打過。結果，他撤回他宣示忠
於美國的誓言，改口宣示永遠忠於英國國王，他成了當初署名者唯一這樣做
的人。

Was he a traitor, as history tells us, or a tortured patriot? We don’t know
for sure. Nowadays, Dad is quick to point out with a smile that Richard was
actually the brother of our direct ancestor.
誠如歷史所敘述，無論他是叛國賊，還是被拷打的愛國者，我們的確不知道事
實究竟為何。不過，父親面帶微笑的指出Richard Stockton是我們的直系祖先
的同胞。

After winding through several states and generations, another interesting
character by the name of Harling Smith Stockton, believed to be in our
direct line, pops up in Missouri, where he was apparently at the center
of a great deal of havoc. He was thought to have ridden with Quantrill, the
infamous Confederate marauder from Missouri, who burned down most of
Lawrence, Kansas. Years ago, on a Jazz preseason trip to Lawrence, I tried
to locate some record of this association but was unable to do so. Still, the
family lore persists.
歷經數代後，另外一個引起關注的人物是Harling Smith Stockton，據說他也是
我們的祖先，活躍於密蘇里州，顯然他同時是造成當地不少破壞的不肖人士。他
被認為是Quantrill團體的人，Quantrill是密蘇里當地聲名狼藉的南方掠奪匪黨，
他們造成堪薩斯州的勞倫斯許多的破壞。幾年前，有一次隨著爵士隊季前賽之旅
時到達勞倫斯郡，我嘗試找出一些與他們有關的文獻紀錄，可惜什麼都沒找到。
儘管如此，我們家族的醜聞仍然存在。

A portion of the Missouri Stockton clan eventually mounted up and joined
a wagon train headed west. Their destination was the fertile Willamette Valley
in Oregon. Mother Nature had other ideas. With winter approaching, the
weary travelers chose not to brave both the Rocky and Cascade mountain
ranges. They settled in rather than risk the dangerous cold. The wagons had
stopped near what is now Parma, Idaho. It was there that my great-grandpa
met Ellen Glennen of Ireland. They fell in love and were married, and
Great-Grandpa Stockton learned how to work the rocky and generally
inhospitable earth to produce crops. Parma became their home, and it was
here that GrandpaHouston was born.
最後，一部分密蘇里州的Stockton親屬增加人數搭乘前往西部拓荒的馬車團。
他們的目標是奧勒岡州土壤肥沃的威拉米特流域。大自然有它的運作法則。當
冬天接近時，拓荒者們疲倦到無法前往洛磯山和大峽谷。他們停下馬車，選擇
駐紮在現今愛達荷州的帕瑪市，避免飢寒交迫。就在那裡，我的曾祖父遇見了
來自愛爾蘭的Ellen Glennen，他們隨即陷入愛河後成家。曾祖父學會如何在當
地充滿岩石又一片荒涼的土地種植作物。帕瑪市成為了他們的家，而祖父Houston
就是在這裡出生。
