[閒聊] 論1892年巡洋艦的定位

英國海軍少將Rear-Admiral Samuel.Long於1892年發表了我於前文分享的文章

Long於本文中，先介紹了巡洋艦於艦隊中的定位層級後開始聚焦在巡洋艦這個分類上，接
著透過巡洋艦的不同工作方向下去描述巡洋艦在實際工作中的概況，再進行總結。



當時的艦隊可以分為三個層級戰艦.巡洋艦.近海軍艦。其中，巡洋艦的部分具有相當的噸
位和攻擊力的差距，如皇家海軍的巡洋艦中就有9000頓的Black和2575頓的pearl

因為角色定位.型態的差異大,所以需要在巡洋艦之下在分類為裝甲.一級.二級.三級與商
業巡洋艦，使其在戰爭中能被正確的安排工作。且其中看起來有些能被賦予
Battle-Cruiser這樣的前綴
而巡洋艦的工作簡單分為三個方向：
(1)To act as look-out ships or scouts for fleets.
　　艦隊偵查
(2)To act independently of fleets for the protection or attack of commerce,
as well as for distant expeditions.
獨立的防護艦隊or商業攻擊艦隊與遠程探險
(3)To convoy slow steam traders.
為慢速的蒸氣貿易船護航



回顧1872年委員會的意見:"遙遠地區的重要利益最好以建立集中隨時能作戰的一級戰鬥艦
艇的海軍力量來確保，而不是依靠有限戰鬥力的巡航艦("important interests in
distant parts of the world are best secured by the establishment of centres
of naval power whence first-class fighting ships may operate, rather than by
relying on cruising ships of limited fighting power.)"

如果這些戰鬥艦艇能有足夠的速度去抓住那些敵人，那麼某些情況下這可能是適用的，然
而＂抓住了才能宰＂（"first catch your hare"）一艘速度慢於巡洋艦的戰列艦是無法
參與巡洋艦在公海中的作戰的。
(所以能夠有高航速的一級巡洋艦的影響力是相當巨大的)


此外Long認為一級巡洋艦或者是Battle-Cruiser是能夠擔任Lowe在1794年光榮六月一日海
戰中快速風帆戰艦的角色定位的(即艦隊的Fast－wind)
且也引述馬漢所說的，在未來，以犧牲防護為代價換取速度和火力的戰列艦似乎不是不可
能的

此外對於戰鬥艦來說，中等口徑的速射炮會比大口徑炮來的更好。在海戰的第一階段，艦
艇必須取得能提供給隨後的魚雷射擊或撞擊戰術的優勢

而透過速射炮，能夠讓對手的動力損失或操舵損毀等，從而使得對手處於被雷擊或撞擊戰
術的劣勢之中。對於Long來說，高速船艦行動的場面在未來的活躍是可預期的。



接著Long開始談巡洋艦對於貿易保護、貿易概況以及當時的海上交通線

對於當時的英國來說，蘇伊士運河的重要性就已經非常高了。
如果因為戰爭導致蘇伊士關閉，從孟買到普茲矛斯的航線走繞過開普敦的航線的話要比走
運河要多出4424節。對商船隊的影響不必多說；對於海軍來說要增加的護航巡洋艦就要多
很多。

儘管如此，很難指望護航艦艇的數量能超過襲擊者的數量，因此在煤站派駐強力的巡洋艦
，並配有維護良好的電報通信對於維護大英帝國定義上的海上航線是較為有利的


最後Long總結前面對於巡洋艦的分析。
(1)There exists, in fact, a class of cruisers analogous to battle-ships.
These might advantageously be termed "battle-cruisers."
事實上，存在一種類似戰艦的巡洋艦，或許可被稱為戰鬥巡洋艦
(2)That speed and coal endurance are qualities of primary importance in
cruisers, and should be associated with high freeboard; but that the fighting
qualities should never be diminished below those of corresponding vessels of
other nations, but, if necessary, resort should be had to increased
displacement.
速度和續航力是巡洋艦的核心，且應具有高干弦；然而戰鬥力不能低於其他國家相應的船
隻，必要時應該增排水量
(3)If a quantitative estimate may be hazarded, the minimum sea speed now
acceptable should be 20 knots, and the coal supply sufficient to last a
minimum of seven days, 20 hours each day, at 10 knots and four hours at
chasing speed, besides enough to proceed to and from the base at 10 knots and
fight an action.
最少要20節，煤最少要支撐7天每天20小時於10節航速加上4小時的航程能處於高速追逐狀
態或具有能夠以10節航速返回基地與加入作戰的航程
(4)That powerful cruisers at the end of a telegraph wire will be more
conducive to sea power than numerous small ones, where ocean routes are
concerned.
強大的的巡洋艦等待在電報線的末端(隨時能收到支援作戰的消息)能夠比在航線上的數個
小型巡洋艦更加利於海權
(5)That subsidies should be given to steamship companies for all vessels
maintaining a sea speed of 21 knots.
應該要給以21節高速運輸的公司給予補貼
(6) That the convoy of slow merchant steamers is likely to form an important
feature of naval work in war, and would be a more effectual and economical
means of protecting trade, by ensuring the simultaneous presence of war-ship
and merchantman, than any other at present contemplated.
對於慢速的商船隊的護送會成為戰爭中海軍的重點，戰艦和商船一起行動將會是比其他方
法更有效能確保貿易和經濟的手段

Long的眼光無庸置疑是超前時代的，無論是他對於速射炮的看法或航速和火力的重要性。

很可惜的是他本人在打完這邊論文一個月後就從馬背上摔下來喪生，不過他的理念是有其
他人也支持的－如原文中有提到的時任海軍少將-John Fisher費舍爾，此外還有他朋友
DNC威廉懷特
後者於1897年設計了很符合Long的觀點-(以速射炮對抗戰列艦的戰鬥巡洋艦)
即以速射炮為武器參與Close Action為重的巡洋艦的克雷西級裝巡

當然，除了Long的理念，甲午海戰的實證相信也對於該艦的設計有著相當顯著的影響。
