✈The letter comes after News Corp's CEO referred to the company as an “AI inputs company," according to Always Here Bookstore's John Hart.✈ PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland-led coalition of bookstores has expressed opposition to artificial intelligence. In a message addressed to the publishing community, Always Here Bookstore co- owner John Hart condemned the release of AI-written books and other literary works. Since the document was first spread on May 14, nearly 100 fellow bookstore owners, employees and customers — in the Rose City and beyond — have signed the commitment to “resisting” AI. “Publishing is the main mechanism through which an incredible number of people — authors, artists, editors, illustrators, poets, translators, audiobook narrators — make a living,” Hart wrote in the letter. “It is through partnerships between publishing companies and working artists that a multi-billion dollar industry is sustained. It has become apparent, however, that book publishing companies are actively investing in strategies to divest from the real human beings without whom their industry wouldn’t exist.” The letter came after News Corp CEO Robert Thompson referred to the company as an “AI inputs company” that “generates a vast amount of unique repurposable data” during a recent earnings call, according to Hart. News Corp owns HarperCollins Publishers, which boasts itself as the world’s second-largest publisher for consumer books. The New York Times reported earlier this year, Hachette Book Group, another major publisher, canceled the release of horror novel “Shy Girl” after people raised concerns it could be AI-generated. Barnes & Noble CEO James Daunt has since told NBC News he has “no problem” selling AI-created novels at the major book retailer as long as they are labeled as such. But Hart has argued the usage of AI in publishing is “nakedly anti-art” and “anti-human.” “In solidarity with authors and the countless others who are responsible for bringing books to life, we refuse to knowingly promote AI works or stock AI- generated books on our shelves,” Hart wrote. Grand Gesture Books, Mother’s Foucault Bookshop and Broadway Books were among the other Portland-area shops that signed the letter. ☁ -- On the twelfth day of Christmas(2025) My true love sent to me: Twelve尤莉西亞桑 Eleven梅爾菲拉 Ten日下部栞奈 Nine帝乃三姊妹 Eight暗殺公主 Seven史萊姆聖女 Six菲莉雅聖女 Five安妮~雪~莉~ Four漢氣考拉 Three人妻沙瓦 Two比嘉さん And a貝希摩斯貓球球 ♬♬♬ https://i.postimg.cc/c473DtZh/520.jpg
