鴉片戰爭後，許多中國人前往美國
趁著淘金熱和橫貫鐵路的建設，尋找工作機會
美國西岸是中國人移民的第一站
在舊金山建立了中國人移民區：唐人街

這是一位德裔攝影師 Arnold Genthe 所拍攝的
在被1906年舊金山大地震摧毀之前，舊金山唐人街原本的模樣
這些照片被放在銀行保險櫃裡，沒有被地震損壞而保留下來。

"Some day the whole city will burn up.
 There'll never be another Chinatown like this one,
 and you have its only picture record."
