The captured subject matter includes the tombs of ancient emperors rather
than a glamorized stand-in for global modernity. The political
precariousness of the period is deflected not through the enticement of
urban pleasures but through a desperate effort to instill a sense of
nationalism by reinstating ancient ritual and valorizing poetic practice.
