The different types of capital can be derived from economic capital, but only
at the cost of a more or less great effort of transformation, which is needed
to produce the type of power effective in the field in question. For example,
there are some goods and services to which economic capital gives immediate
access, without secondary costs; others can be obtained only by virtue of a
social capital of relationships (or social obligations) which cannot act
instantaneously, at the appropriate moment, unless they have been established
and maintained for a long time, as if for their own sake, and therefore
outside their period of use, i.e., at the cost of an investment in
sociability which is necessarily long-term because the time lag is one of the
factors of the transmutation of a pure and simple debt into that recognition
of nonspecific indebtedness which is called gratitude.
