: scarcely
: 1. You can use "scarcely" to emphasize that something is only just true
: or only just the case.
: ex: He could scarcely breathe.
: She seemed scarcely aware of him.
: He was scarcely more than a boy.
: 2. You can use "scarcely" to say that something is not true or is not
: the case, in a humorous or critical way.
: ex: It can scarcely be coincidence.
: It was scarcely in their interest to let too many people know.
: Yesterday, however, his view seemed scarcely relevant.
以下從dictionary.com查的
scarce·ly ( P ) Pronunciation Key
adv.
By a small margin; barely: We scarcely made it in time.
Almost not; hardly: We scarcely ever used the reserve generator.
Certainly not: They could scarcely complain after such good treatment.
Usage Note: Because scarcely has the force of a negative, its use with
another negative, as in I couldn't scarcely believe it, is regarded as
incorrect. ·A clause following scarcely is correctly introduced by when or
before; the use of than, though common, is still unacceptable to some
grammarians: The meeting had scarcely begun when (or before but not than) it
was interrupted. See Usage Note at double negative. See Usage Note at hardly.
scarcely
adv 1: by a small margin; "they could barely hear the speaker"; "we hardly
knew them"; "just missed being hit"; "had scarcely rung the bell when the
door flew open"; "would have scarce arrived before she would have found some
excuse to leave"- W.B.Yeats [syn: barely, hardly, just, scarce] 2: almost
not; "he hardly ever goes fishing"; "he was hardly more than sixteen years
old"; "they scarcely ever used the emergency generator" [syn: hardly]

scarcely
1. You can use "scarcely" to emphasize that something is only just true
or only just the case.
ex: He could scarcely breathe.
She seemed scarcely aware of him.
He was scarcely more than a boy.
2. You can use "scarcely" to say that something is not true or is not
the case, in a humorous or critical way.
ex: It can scarcely be coincidence.
It was scarcely in their interest to let too many people know.
Yesterday, however, his view seemed scarcely relevant.
Oxford: only just; almost not:
I can scarcely believe it.
We scarcely ever meet.
W-M: by a narrow margin : only just
ex: had scarcely rung the bell when the door flew open
American Heritage: By a small margin; barely:
ex: We scarcely made it in time.
因為這兩個意思"only,just" 跟"hardly"差很多;
1. scarcely 是否有only,just的意思?
