[閒聊] 為什麼想當翻譯？

今早一邊吃早餐一邊翻《翻譯科學探索》(Toward a Science of Translating) 的時候，

剛好翻到第七章，討論到譯者扮演的到底是怎樣一個角色；

我們的奈達兄(Eugene A. Nida)竟然開宗明義地說：

「For the most part the translator's lot

has been one of little thanks, poor pay, and plenty of abuse.」


過了幾頁，在談到譯者「做翻譯的動機」時，奈達兄再度語出驚人；

他說：「But since pay for translating is notoriously poor,

few persons engage in it merely for monetary reward.」


講得真是太妙了






P.S.我還以為譯者喊窮是台灣／華人世界的特有現象；

還是說，美國譯者現在的待遇比奈達兄寫這本書的時候好多了？
