[聊聊] 詩意的理解

1645 年 Milton 有一本詩集問世,

名字叫 Poems of Mr John Milton, Both English and Latin. 其中有 10 首 sonnets

後來在 1673 再版時, 又加了一些詩, 其中有 9 首 sonnets

"When I consider how my light is spent" 就是其中一首.

另外有 4 首 sonnets 是在他死後才出版.

後來有些編輯 Milton's works 的書就依推測年份把這些 sonnets 統整編號,

所謂的 Sonnet 19 便是這樣來的.

但另外有些 editors (主要都是 new historicists) 認為這並不妥,

所以把 1645 年版的詩, 跟後來再版加入的詩分開, 當然 uncollected poems 也獨立一組

因此編號就不一樣. 如 Stephen Orgel & Jonathan Goldberg 的 Oxford edition (1991)

這首詩是 sonnet 16.

Milton 的 sonnets 跟 Sidney, Spenser, Shakespeare 一樣, 都是沒有 titles 的

至於 "To His Blindness" 的 title (or subtitle) 則是 18 世紀後人加上的.

PS. sonnets 的算法可能各家有異, 以我上面所說, 一共只有 23 首 (Oxford edition)

但 Norton Anthology of English Literature I (5th ed.) 卻說總共有 24 首,

不知道是不是把 Canzone 也算進去?
